Australian Society Of Coloured Pencil Artists- LAUNCH!!!

10/9/2015

I am extremely excited to announce that Australia proudly now has its own coloured pencil society. We invite everyone, artists and appreciators, local and international, to join the AUSCPA family and grow with us towards creating an internationally recognised pool of talent and inspiration, particularly for those who have never used coloured pencils before! Please visit our website www.auscpa.org and explore the possibilities! (I for one am extremely proud to be a part of this, and know what we have planned! It is truly a new era for coloured pencils in Australia! )

The Dog With the American Accent!

Reposeful Dignity, 25 hours, 24 x 28cm, Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran D'Ache Luminance white, Canson Mi-Teintes Blush smooth side, Reference supplied with permission.
This is a beautiful champion Basset Hound, USA born and bred, and he has the most gorgeous head!  Drawn for a very very dear friend who breeds Basset's, this handsome head is heading over the USA as a gift for his mummy.   As soon as he is gifted later this month, I can reveal who he is and his amazing pedigree and awards....he's quite famous!    A beautiful doggy to draw, and given that my soul dog was a Basset, I knew that look intimately.....that sad, floppy, look of reposeful dignity.  kxx

'From a fun filled excursion day with my 4yr old to Chesterfield Farm in Melbourne's outer east, to the cover of Australia's premier magazine for Drawing Photography and Painting, these roosters have certainly been a surprise!
With my cheap Ebay Olympus camera in hand, and an overcast (usual) Melbourne day, I didn't think that I would get any good reference photo's.
When I returned home, two shots of these chookies stood out.....and so the story begins!

Picture
I decided to combine the two photo's and create my own background.  I was happy with the way they turned out, but never thought that I would see them gracing a magazine cover all over Australia!
The process of writing an article is and interesting one.  After my initial write up, I would have written and re-written it half a dozen times, each time, refine my words, ensuring that I was getting the points across that were relevant, and covering all of the questions that the publisher requires you to cover!   What I have is just right now.....and after a few people did some proof reading, off it went to Woodland Publishing.
I tried to imagine what I would like to know about the artists that I revere, and what inspires and moves them......I hope I have succeeded.
To think that you have been given such a brilliant opportunity is very humbling.  To walk into a newsagency, to the art mag section, and see something that you have created from nothing is quite moving.  And the joy is even more fun shared!  My 4yr old loves it....and happily tells everyone that he chose the roosters and made them pose like that!  lol.
It is overwhelming to be given a voice- the artist is no longer faceless, and the work becomes loved and inspected by all.
The other amazing thing that happens when you are published, is you begin to appreciate, finally, all of the hundreds of hours that you have put into something that you are so passionate about.  To see dozens of your works, carefully designed into a mural of effort, sprawling from one page to the next......is quite emotional.   I remember every single drawing, where I was, what I was thinking, what state of mind I was in, and, whether I feel that I failed or succeeded at the challenge I set for myself.
And you also begin to accept that you have a style and it is yours and your alone.....and THAT is the most rewarding part.  Whether it is good or bad art is not for me to decide.  I will continue to do what I think is beautiful, regardless of what others say.....and share along the way, praying deep deep down, that someone likes what I have done.............
Creative Artist Issue 7 is all one big validation of the above.    I truly hope that you enjoy having a cuppa, a read and a look at many many hours of effort and inspiration from one human , with no intention other than to create beauty.
Creative Artist Issue 7, Available August 31st 2015, newsagents around Australian, or call 02 4722 2260 for a copy!  kxx

The Prize winning pencils create dreams......

And here is my new girl, finally finished. Ballerina Dreamer, 32 x 42cm, Prismacolor Premier Pencils, Gouache highlights, Fabriano Artistico paper, 52 hours, Irishka Photography. This drawing has been completed entirely using the full set of Prismacolor Pencils that I was extremely lucky to have won as 'Best Of Show' in the Ann Kullberg 16th Annual Members Exhibition (http://annkullberg.com/pages/member-show-info). And so, this is my 'Ann Kullberg prize winning pencils painting!' I would also like to therefore dedicate this drawing to CP - Ann Kullberg's magazine for Colored Pencil Artists, Bleuie Acosta, Priscilla and the team with Ann who all work with so much passion, determination and experience to make coloured pencils and accessible medium supported with great education and inspiration. Ann has started the careers of many artists.......I believe, humbly, that I am on that list of people who owe Ann a great deal. I also dedicate this to all of the people out there with a dream.......sometimes those dreams do come true. Ref photo chosen and title chosen by my 4 year old! (he's got a real good little eye that one!) . I hope you like her........I wanted a painterly, warm, enveloping and ethereal feel to her.....perhaps you can read her thoughts and guess what her dreams are........kxxx

Anonymous.  Who is this?

Anonymous, 75 x60cm, oil, gallery wrap canvas, 45 hours, Cozyta photogaphy

This work is generating a fair bit of discussion amongst friends.  Is this a man?  A woman?  Is this the type of character that you don't want lurking around your home?  Are they up to no good.....or is it quite the opposite?  A soul that wants to blend in, but prefers to watch, observe, survey the environment, they have a presence but no contribution as yet?
I was so drawn to this image....he/ she is perhaps one of my favourites.  It plays into insecurities and fears, but I also see a cautious dweller, finely assessing and quietly, patiently loitering through the corridors of life.  .  What are the subjects thoughts?  What is their story?  Why don't they want to be identified....yet?    I'll leave that up to you........I would love for you to share with me how this image makes you feel and what you see. kxx

Well, it is officially OFFICIAL. This is the most incredible honour of my career to date!    My drawing 'Rest On The Ferry' of my cousin Lee and her two sons coming home after a long day, has won BEST IN SHOW in the International Ann Kullberg 2015 Online exhibition. What an unexpected, emotional and thrilling honour! With me are fellow Aussie's Julie Podstolski who received an Honorary Mention, Michelle Ripari and Karen Hull. These are the best coloured pencil artists from all over the world showcasing their exceptional and talented work.
Thank you so much to Ann Kullberg and her team, Holly Siniscal, the judge and all of the artists, the work is exceptional. YAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So proud of the Australians!  Kindly Karinaxx
